Sunday 9 April the Murray Bridge Golf Club hosted the RSL’s Annual ANZAC Sports Carnival which featured an Ambrose Golf Competition where teams competed in the “Golf War” and contested for the Gulf Perpetual Shield. The Shield acknowledges the Australian Defence Force’s contribution to the Gulf War in the early 1990’s.

The Sports Carnival is a fund raiser were the RSL aims to help educate the community on the ANZAC Legend via sport, acknowledge Australian Military history, local serving members & raise funds that benefit the local community & veterans. This year funds raised will assist two students from the Murray Bridge area on a Study Tour to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of World War One.

Conditions weren’t ideal as a number of teams pulled out at the last moment, the teams that remained fought the “Golf War” and showed the true ANZAC Spirit of facing and accepting the challenge no matter the odds and the adversity.

RSL Sports Coordinator Joe Di Santo addressed the crowd, fellow RSL member Bill Graham whom was posted at Woodside during the height of the Gulf War spoke of what it was like at the time and recited the Ode, Musician Ben Wohlfeil also provided support.

After the Ceremony it was down to business on the green where the teams battled it out over 18 holes.

The Team from the Wanderers Cricket Club consisting of Lou Bailey, Noel Hartman, Peter Ansell and Ryan Doutre won the inaugural Gulf Perpetual Shield.

The Murray Bridge RSL would like to thank the Murray Bridge Golf Club and all that participated to support the cause. For more details on the RSL’s Sports Carnival head to www.facebook.com/MBRSLANZACGAMES2017/#
